Fall Cleanup in Winchester, Indiana: A Yard Checklist

A good fall cleanup in Winchester, Indiana comes down to a few jobs done before the ground freezes. Keep leaves from matting down on the grass, cut back brush and overgrowth along the edges, and get the driveway and fence lines ready for winter. For most lawns, mulching the leaves in place is better than raking them to the curb.

Here is the checklist we work from, and what to do yourself versus what to hand off.

Why does fall cleanup matter in east central Indiana?

Leaves left in a thick layer over winter block light from the grass. Purdue's turfgrass team notes that heavy leaf cover can smother and kill turf, and it favors snow mold, a winter lawn disease.

Fall is also the easiest time to see what is growing where it should not. With the leaves off, brush, saplings and vines along fence lines and yard edges stand out. Ground that gets cleaned up now is ready to green up in spring.

Fall cleanup checklist for Winchester, Indiana yards

  1. Keep mowing while the grass is growing. Mulch leaves as you go, and mow when they are dry.

  2. Don't let leaves pile up wet. Check low spots, beds and along fences, where they collect deepest.

  3. Pick up sticks and fallen limbs before you mow so they do not get thrown or jam the deck.

  4. Walk your fence lines and yard edges. Note brush, saplings and vines creeping in. Fall and winter are good times to cut them back.

  5. Clear overgrowth around sheds, outbuildings and drive edges. It hides damage and gives critters cover over winter.

  6. Look over the gravel driveway. Fill ruts and fix washouts now, before freeze and thaw make them worse and before snow hides them.

  7. Mark anything you don't want hit. Stakes, low pipes and drain outlets are easy to lose under leaves.

Should you mulch leaves or rake them?

For most yards, mulch them. Purdue's research summary found that leaves chopped fine with a mower did no harm to the soil or turf, and may help the soil. It is also less work than raking and bagging.

That is how we handle leaf cleanup. Leaves are mulched in place, not hauled away. On lots with a lot of big trees, the leaf layer can get deep, so we look at the volume when we come out.

Can you burn leaves in Indiana?

Sometimes, but there are rules. Under the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's open burning rules, leaves and clean brush can only be burned in a burn barrel at a private residence. It is not allowed where a city or county ordinance bans it. Check your town's rules before you light anything.

Mulching skips all of that. No smoke, no burn barrel, no ash to deal with.

What Ridgeline does in a fall cleanup

We handle the bigger and messier parts of the list:

  • Leaf cleanup: leaves mulched in place across the lawn.

  • Lawn care: the last mows of the season.

  • Brush and overgrowth: fence lines, yard edges and the back of the lot. See our brush removal page. Our forestry mulcher handles trees up to about 9 inches across, and the tree shear handles up to about 12 inches. The mulch stays on the ground with no burn piles, and hauling material away is an option if you want it gone.

  • Yard restoration: getting a neglected or overgrown yard back to usable ground. See yard restoration.

  • Gravel driveways: ruts and washouts fixed before winter. See gravel driveway repair.

We also come back to check regrowth after clearing, so brush does not just come back in spring.

What does a fall cleanup cost?

It depends on the yard. Hayes looks at every job in person before quoting, and estimates are free. A quote comes down to:

  • How big the yard is and how many leaves are down

  • How thick the brush and overgrowth are

  • The size of any trees that need to come out

  • Ground conditions, like soft or wet spots

  • Access, such as gates, slopes and tight spaces

Fall cleanup FAQ

When should I do a fall cleanup in Indiana?

Once most of the leaves are down and before snow covers the ground. Mowing leaves in as they fall keeps the job small.

Do you haul leaves away?

No. We mulch leaves in place. The chopped leaves break down into the lawn.

Will mulched leaves hurt my lawn?

Purdue's turf research found no harm to soil or turf when leaves are chopped fine. A thick layer of whole, wet leaves is what causes problems.

Are estimates free?

Yes. Hayes looks at every job in person and gives you a quote after seeing it.
